OMNIA Hotel

An Unforgettable Experience in the Swiss Alps

Auf dem Fels, 3920 Zermatt | Website | More

There are no cars allowed in Zermatt, so when you arrive via train, you hotel shuttles and mountain taxis, which are like steel golf-carts but enclosed, built for narrow passage, and super cool. Most hotels have one to pick you up and shuttle you to their location. The OMNIA experience is even more extraordinary because you enter through a tunnel inside a mountain, then take an elevator up through the mountain to the reception.

There you are instantly greeted warmly by hotel staff. You are warmly greeted by name as if they are waiting just for you, and then provided with a glass of champagne to enjoy by the fire. While taking the hotel tour, you immediately understand why this is one of the most talked-about hotels in Zermatt. The village's view, the limited number of rooms and access to the ski lift are just a few of the reasons. The topper, house-made bourbon available for free drinking, Matterhorn chocolate treats, and Swiss designer furniture.

Bergwelt Grindelwald

Nestled in the Swiss Alps in Grindelwald

Bergwelt 4, 3818 Grindelwald | Website

Grindelwald is one of our favorite villages in the Jungfrau area. Located just a couple of hours from Basel or Zurich, it's incredibly convenient and quite the escape from the city vibes. Bergwelt Grindelwald, a newer addition to Grindelwald, welcomes you with high-end Swiss vibes and a central location. It features a cozy lounge and bar, an excellent restaurant, and the most comfortable guest rooms. Bergwelt Grindelwald is located in the heart of the village and is convenient to the gondolas if you are skiing, snowboarding, or hiking. It's also nearby to all of the best restaurants!

L’AND

Unwinding in a Portuguese Vineyard

7050-051 Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal | Website | More

L'AND quickly stands out due to its modern white architecture with warm wood interiors, on-site vineyard, and restaurant using locally sourced ingredients. Our Sky View Room featured a built-in outdoor fireplace, a roll-back ceiling to reveal star-filled night skies and indoor and outdoor soaking tub options. I still miss it today!

We took our relaxation to the next level at L'AND, especially compared to how I typically plot out our itinerary. I usually want to hit all the top restaurant options, check out some hidden breakfast gems, and take far too many photos. I still managed to accomplish the latter, but we enjoyed all breakfasts and dinners in L'AND's restaurant. Breakfast options included an incredible take on Egg Benedict, the perfect crépe, the trendy avocado toast, and an assortment of sweet treats, meats, cheeses, and various granola, fruit, and yogurt options. The seasonal dinner menu features fresh vegetables, delicious local products, and land vs. sea breakdown.

Tsubaki Tower

Håfa Adai from Tsubaki Tower

241 Gun Beach Rd, Tamuning, 96913, Guam | Website | More

We quickly fell in love with Tsubaki Tower's large infinity pool and Nunu, the poolside bar and restaurant. Every room in Tsubaki has a killer view overlooking Tamuning Bay. The hotel also features several little cafes and bars in its interior, a large restaurant on its main floor, and a top-floor restaurant. Whether you want a classic Old Fashioned, a great glass of wine, and often live music, be sure to check out La Cantina, the rooftop bar. As always, we highly value excellent customer service. There's no shortage of excellent service from the friendly and oft-smiling faces at Tsubaki. Even with masks, the happy vibe radiates through. We, of course, have become somewhat regulars at NuNu bar, where AJ and Michael make the poolside bar experience that much more special!

Six Senses

The Douro Valley in Portugal

Quinta Vale de Abrão, Samodães, Portugal | Website | More

From the moment our car door was opened, the experience began. And I do mean experience because, in From the moment the valet opened our car door, the experience began. And I do mean experience because, in everything Six Senses does, it seeks to provide you with the very best experience, even if it's the small things such as checking in or picking up your car for the day. And while this resort is one of the most beautiful places we've ever seen (we'll come back to this), what truly makes your visit a magical experience from beginning to end is without a doubt the exceptional staff. Even with masks on, you can feel the warmth and sincere hospitality. You are cared for in every way, and every detail of your stay is intentional with the hope that you should not have a worry in the world.

Arriving at the reception is like entering a calming spa. If you are lucky, you'll be greeted by Aqua, the hotel dog, and the official greeter. Checking in, you will receive a warm cloth to cleanse your hands, a small treat to vanquish any hunger, and of course, your very first port to prepare you for the vineyard visits that lie ahead.

Sublime Comporta

Comporta, Portugal

EN 261-1, MUDA, CCI 3954, Grândola, Portugal | Website

For those that prefer a long beautiful shoreline to the hidden beaches among the cliffs, Comporta is your answer. We've now visited around fifteen different beaches in Portugal, and those in Comporta were our favorites.

Sublime Comporta is easily your best hotel choice when staying in the region. This spacious property features multiple lodging possibilities yet is still quiet and private for your relaxing holiday. We enjoyed the Owners Suite, which featured a private hot tub overlooking the gorgeous treeline.

There are three restaurants on the property, Sem Porta, the Food Circle, and Tasca da Comporta. There’s also a 'can't-miss' seaside restaurant, Sublime Comporta Beach Club, serving fresh seafood, and cool and refreshing drinks!

Emeline

A Stay at Emeline in Charleston

181 Church St, Charleston, SC 29401, United States | Website | More

Emeline has achieved a rare feat by opening the heart of a historic district yet being embraced by the locals. As if that isn't difficult for any new business, Emeline did so while opening during the pandemic. Much of the hotel's space and many photos chronicle some of the histories from the block. Several buildings spaces make up what we now see in Emeline, and the creators took great detail in embracing that heritage.

The beauty of Emeline is all in the details. With each new hotel we visit, the bed's quality becomes more and more paramount. We love a night of great sleep! In addition to an incredible bed, small details like a turntable with a few vinyl albums, a cozy living room with warm colors, and beautiful pillows make for a unique and memorable stay. Inside the hotel, you'll find an excellent restaurant, Frannie & The Fox, and one of the cities best coffee shops, Clerks Coffee Company. That's just the beginning! The hotel itself features 212 all-king bed guest rooms, 128 of which are luxurious suites! There are 16 double king bed rooms available as well! If you're visiting for business or holding an event, Emeline is one of the best options as they have 13,000 sq ft of event space and multiple private occasion spaces.

Casa Buonocore

Positano, Amalfi Coast

Via Cristoforo Colombo, 77, Positano SA, Italy | Website | More

Positano stole our hearts upon arrival. That is, once we caught our breath from the stairs leading to Casa Buonocore. The Superior Room, our choice room for our stay, featured a very relaxed Bohemian feel. The suite featured a large comfortable bed, plenty of space, a stocked minibar, and the perfect terrace overlooking that iconic side for which we all know of Positano! A beautiful spread is available for breakfast featuring fresh pastries, meats, eggs, regional cakes, and more! It is continuously changing, so you’re guaranteed to be able to try new things!

The Island of Capri

Via Croce, 11-15, Capri, Italy | Website | More

Just a short walk away from the famous city's bustling scene yet far enough to be peaceful and serene, and you'll find Capri Tiberio Palace. Who of us doesn't need an island getaway where you can be pampered, relax, and truly unwind. Capri Tiberio Palace a fantastic option in Capri! This 5-star hotel has it all, including smiling faces at every turn from the moment you arrive.

The rooms and suites are all unique and quite incredible. We stayed in the Studio Suite, which featured a large balcony with a colorful tiled floor, lounge space, and astounding view - so very Amalfi! Also, on-site, you'll find SPA Tiberio and Pool for those seeking the full wellness treatment!

Miramonti Boutique Hotel

Sud Tirol, Italian Alps

Via San Caterina, 14 St. Kathreinstrasse 14 Hafling, Merano, Italy | Website | More

Hidden in the alps with infinity pools hovering over cliffs and the city of Merano in the valley, Miramonti is a haven for relaxation and unwinding. Sunny days at Miramonti gave us the most beautiful views of mountains in the distance. I was fortunate that my wishes for snow went unmet because while scenic and cozy, the views would have paled in comparison.

Our visit to Miramonti was the sort of relaxation that we didn’t even know that we needed. The typical day included sleeping in, enjoying breakfast in the all-glass restaurant overlooking the valley, venturing into the forest for a winter hike, and then relaxing in the Onson Pool, a blend of Japanese bathing and alpine recreation. This pool was relatively new and was quite hotter than the 32 C degree Infinity Pool.

Crossing Condotti

Perfectly Situated in Rome

Via Mario de' Fiori, 28, Rome, Italy | Website | More

Slowly buying other apartments, Carlotta and Alfio converted a traditional center-city multi-family residence into a beautiful and warm oasis for tourists who wish to enjoy all that this great city has to offer. The owners' love for creativity and art is evident. Carlotta handpicks all of the timeless works of art that accentuate the hotel's classic architectural design. Splashes of color and one-of-a-kind antiques coupled with modern elements, demonstrate her clear "eye" for beauty. Dark colors flow into bright rooms harmoniously, which are offset by gorgeous original wood floors and ceilings. Each room is unique and has personal details for every guest to enjoy and appreciate.

High ceilings, low lighting, and large windows overlooking Rome's historic streets give patrons a home-like feeling and intimate experience. While the comfortable and cozy beds and warm rain showers help refresh a traveler and prepare them for visiting some of Rome's most famous sites. Crossing Condotti is nestled between restaurants and luxury shopping, making it easy for guests to enjoy Rome's fantastic food scene and look good doing it.

NOAH Surf House

Portugal’s Surfing Paradise

Av. do Atlântico, A dos Cunhados, Portugal | Website | More

Portugal has some of the most beautiful coastlines with steep cliffs and gorgeous shores. Though the water is often cold, it's still swimmable in the summertime. The ocean is a variety of crystal blues. On our drive along the coast, we visited several overlooks to capture the sea's beauty from above. The coastline north of Lisbon is a surfer's dream with massive swells, windy days, and a low-key vibe. We were thrilled to kick off our coastal adventures by starting in Santa Cruz and staying at Noah Surf House, a well-known surfer destination. Noah Surf House is a well-balanced mix of modern with driftwood decor and hippie beach vibes that will have you feeling relaxed and chill in no time.

From the moment you arrive, the environment encourages you to act like a kid again and not take life too seriously. There's a mini skate park, surfboards, morning yoga, open bonfires with acoustic music, and an on-site surf shop. Even the piano says "Touch," encouraging little ones to let go and try something new. It's a young kid and the inner kid's delight! From every vantage point, you view the ocean, whether from the main restaurant, pool deck, solar deck, or from your personal bungalow. We loved the décor, which is all things sea-related.

Hotel Bagués

In the Center of Barcelona

La Rambla, 105, Barcelona, Spain | Website | More

Ideally situated on the lively Las Ramblas street in Barcelona sits Hotel Bagués. In its former life this building was a bustling prominent jewelry factory. Now you’ll find something far different yet incredibly special. Derby Hotels showcases Hotel Bagués in Barcelona, a 5-star luxury hotel that has a true appreciation for the local culture and art.

The buildings history of jewelry manufacturing is paid homage on the first floor where jewelry is on display. The beautifully crafted lights in the main lobby sitting room were one of our favorite details. I have fallen in love with the boutique vibes vs standard hotels and this is a great example as to why!

Le Chambard

Alsace, France

9-13 Rue du Général de Gaulle, Kaysersberg, France | Website | More

There's no shortage of places to see or villages through which to stroll. You'll find vineyards, villages, restaurants, and shops sprinkled throughout the Alsace region. In the very heart of the town, you'll find Le Chambard, with two notable restaurants housed inside. If you don't get to stay or do anything in the Alsace, come here to experience one of their excellent restaurants – Le Chambard Winstub or La Table d'Olivier Nasti. The rooms are recently remodeled and have a cozy yet simplistic upscale feel.

While in Kaysersberg, you can walk to the castle ruins of Chateau Schlossberg. There's not much to see in terms of the castle itself, but it gives you a great lookout over Kaysersberg and the vineyards' rolling hillside.

Terra Dominicata

Nestled in the Mountains South of Barcelona

Carretera, T-702, Km 13, Escaladei, Tarragona, Spain | Website | More

Terra Dominicata, or TD, is located in the Montsant Natural Park, in the north of the Priorat region, just southwest of Barcelona. The Carthusian monks picked this perfect place to put their monastery in the 12th century! TD features 26 beautiful rooms, their own cellar, an outdoor pool, and more.

TD gives you the perfect feel of seclusion. If you just want to relax and sunbathe by the pool, this is an excellent location for that. I get a bit stir crazy, so I was thrilled with their Experience offerings. We all participated in one of the Cocktail Mixology courses with Marc and had a fantastic time! Marc was terrific, and his mixologist skills make this an enjoyable and informative experience.

Secure your evening reservations for dinner at TD’s on-site restaurant, Alma Mater. Alma Mater’s Head Chef is an Italian native who started his career at Michelin restaurants in Italy. He later moved to Washington DC and is now plating up excellent food inside Terra Dominicata. My order of the Risotto with Prawn and Roe Tartar and Monkfish Fishermen’s Soup with Cockles and Fennel Salad was perfection! As always, loving people and smiling faces make a difference in the experience.

Hotel Beau Séjour Lucerne

Overlooking Lake Luzern, Switzerland

Haldenstrasse 53, Luzern | Website | More

Looking for a combination of history, art, and a funky-fresh, eclectic design? Beau Sējour, le petit grand hotel has it all, including a little play on words with the hotel name. A "grand hotel" often refers to a large and luxurious hotel with great architectural style. With only 28 rooms, it may not be "grand" per se, but it comes packed with loads of style and local art. This family-run business has outstanding staff and creates an intimate, hip environment where you can admire local art, take in a view of Lake Lucerne, or enjoy a delicious cocktail on the hotel front porch.

Manuel, the hotel co-owner and manager, is obsessed with details and takes pride in hand-selecting every aspect of the hotel's design. Built in 1875, there's a charming mix of traditional and modern interior design. Beautifully maintained wooden floors and crown molding are juxtaposed with modern future designed specifically for the hotel by famous Swiss furniture maker, Daniel Hunziker. All pieces are handmade in Switzerland. You also can feel the imprint of local artist, Nina Staehli, in many of the rooms, my favorite of which is the 'telephone room.' Manuel's brother, Claudio, maintains the front desk and is a beekeeper with 7 bee colonies on the hotel's roof. These brothers stay very busy and even have a boxing club to boot. You can buy their boxing sweatshirts, honey, and other handmade local products in the hotel lobby, including sock monkeys from a local 75-year-old Swiss woman.

Cocorico Guesthouse

in Beautiful Porto, Portugal

Rua Duque de Loulé, nº 97, Porto, Portugal | Website | More

At just over a hundred euros per night, we were able to stay in what we consider the perfect sort of hotel for a city! There's no sense in paying hundreds of euros for a place you will shower and sleep. There’s so much to see and do in Porto and this hidden gem is our go-to.

After a couple of days of walking, exploring, and of course, eating and drinking, Cocorico Luxury Guesthouse was more than we could have asked for, and would typically require a far higher rate in other cities! I somewhat anticipated a 'reason' for it being so affordable, yet it far exceeded our expectations. There is even an attached restaurant with a cozy back terrace where you can enjoy breakfast and coffee. You’re sure to love its boutique vibe!

Hotel Grand Ferdinand

Vienna, Austria

Schubertring 10-12, Wien, Austria | Website | More

Grand Ferdinand is not only one of the most reasonably priced hotel options, but it’s also ideally situated on the ring, giving you quick and easy access to the old city center, tram lines, and bordering some key shopping district options. Hotel Grand Ferdinand is one of the only remaining family-owned hotels in Vienna. It’s gorgeous, and we immediately fell in love thanks to all of the smiling faces and fantastic service. The rooms are beautifully appointed and everything you would want in your stay!

The hotel features three restaurants, Meissl & Schadn, Gulash & Söhne, and Grand Étage Vienna. The latter is only accessible for hotel guests and features a beautiful breakfast spread.

The High Line Hotel

Our Go-To Lodging in Manhattan

180 10th Ave, New York, NY 10011, United States | Website | More

The High Line Hotel resides in a former monastery in West Chelsea. To say it has character would be an understatement. From every turn to each of the sixty rooms, it screams boutique and comfort. Each room features free Wi-Fi, a comfy pillow-top mattress, oversized Turkish cotton towels, and more. In the lobby of the hotel, you’ll find a cozy coffee shop that morphs into a cocktail bar in the evenings. This hotspot is a local favorite and where you’ll often find the dogs of the neighborhood.

If you’re requiring a hotel with event or meeting space and want to avoid the stuffy feel of the usual vibe, The High Line Hotel offers the most exceptional event space in the city. The iconic Hoffman Hall, featuring incredible gothic architecture, offers 8,000 square feet with the most beautiful up-lit ceiling.

I'm a US expat, blogging photographer and world-traveler who may or may not like tequila a bit too much.
