A Magnificent Hike in Grindelwald
Welcome to a land of jagged mountain peaks, floral lined trails, and picturesque cows donning their infamous large bells. Grindelwald is undeniably a quintessential scene representing Switzerland and the Swiss Alps, and another favorite of ours when craving a mountain adventure.
If you don't enjoy the mountains, this is not a place for you! Lucky for us, we love the mountains and enjoy nature walks and day hikes. In continuing our series on our current home country of Switzerland, we drive just 30 minutes from our recent featured location of Lauterbrunnen.

A Magnificent Hike in Grindelwald
During this visit, we hiked an 8.5km intermediate trail that our travel mates mapped out on kommoot. We had lunch plans at my favorite Grindelwald pizza restaurant, so we selected this trail to earn the meal! Our day was beautiful, and the views and photo-ops were more than worth the 430m ascent!
As opposed to some other hikes like Ebenalp, we hiked this one correctly, uphill and downhill! As I mentioned before, many visitors to Switzerland take the railways or gondolas to the peak and then walk down. The Swiss are known for hiking up to the top and often back down! The citizens and experienced immigrants in Switzerland are generally in excellent health and enjoy hiking as a regular and seemingly leisurely activity!
What To Do In Grindelwald
While we've only visited a few days for day trips, Grindelwald offers plenty of options to spend your time!
Jungfraujoch
If you're visiting and aren't close enough to visit often, you MUST visit this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Catch the train from Klein Scheidegg to ride the highest railway in the world to "The Top of Europe."
Bachalpsee
One of the most beautiful scenes in Switzerland is just a gondola away! Bachalpsee is a short 1hr hike from First, the gondola stop. The photo ops are incredible with the lake, flowers, mountains, and, hopefully, a beautiful sky! The reflection from the lake is incredible.
Eiger Trail
Fancy a beautiful 6km hike to the base of Eiger's North Face? Take the Jungfrau railway to Eigergletscher. It's a relatively easy hike with some technical areas that are rope-assisted.
Skiing
I'm so embarrassed to admit this publically. I haven't skied in over ten years! We were even pretty good at it. I just haven't had the desire to, even after moving to Switzerland. Many of our friends ski or snowboard and love the fresh powder in the alps!
Dining
I grew up with a tremendous love for pizza. I admit that after moving to Basel, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of quality pizza establishments. I was thrilled to find Onkel Tom's Hutte in Grindelwald on our first visit. It's always our go-to for lunch because it's reliably excellent with a thin crispy crust with fresh and flavorful toppings. The prep is different than you typically find here with the topping spilling to the edges for a perfect pie. If you're staying for the night or longer, there are also excellent locations for dining!
Lodging
